For courses taught by several faculty members, the course syllabus and class schedule are listed with the teacher's name because specific details and due dates vary according to the teacher and class meeting time.


The Art of Storytelling - EDU/HUM/STO 292
This foundational course introduces students to folktales, myths, and legends, along with biographical and personal stories. Students learn how to choose and learn a story, plus tips for effective presentation. Because it fills a humanities requirement, there is a good deal of writing in this course.

Multicultural Folktales - EDU/ENH/STO 294
This foundational course introduces students to all of the types of folktales. Students learn about tale types and motifs and how to find variants of stories. Because it fills a humanities requirement, there is a good deal of reading and writing in this course.

Intercultural Perspectives - HUM 260
This humanities course is an elective for the Program in Storytelling. It deals with African American, Native American Indian, and Mexican American cultures. We read and discuss topics like initiations, cross-cultural communication, origins, education, language and bilingualism, literature, and the environment.

This course is for serious storytellers who want to hone their craft and are ready to prepare a half hour storytelling program for a given audience.

STO 286 Using Storytelling in a Variety of Settings
This required course for the Academic Certificate gives students opportunities to explore ways storytelling can be used in business, educational, healing, and interpretive settings.

Storytelling in Educational Settings - STO 289AA
This one-credit class is designed to give teachers a taste of the possible types of stories and the ways stories can be used with students of all ages. Before the last class, students must TELL two stories to a class, introducing them and providing follow-up activities.

Children's Literature - EDU/ENH 291
Children's Literature is an elective in the Program in Storytelling. The course is designed for anyone interested in working with children, either as parents, teachers, or child-care providers.

Multicultural Folktales II - STO 295
This class gives serious storytelling students an opportunity to research a culture to find the connections between the versions of stories told in the culture and the values and customs of the people in the culture.

Storytelling Circles
This one-credit class provides an opportunity for storytellers to work on stories and get positive feedback and support. The class meets every other week, eight times, during the semester.

Storytelling for Literacy
This one-credit elective course is modeled on Donald Davis' book WRITING AS A SECOND LANGUAGE: FROM EXPERIENCE TO STORY TO PROSE. In addition to reading Davis' book, students are provided with opportunities to practice his ideas.

Biographical Storytelling
This one-credit elective class allows students to delve into the life of a person--either a family member or a person from history. Excercises are introduced to allow the students to "play" with elements before crafting the story.

Storytelling Practicum
This course is intended to be the last one taken for the Program in Storytelling Certificate. This is the opportunity to spend a semester researching, preparing, and presenting stories to a group on a continuing basis.

THP 211AB Storytelling with Puppets
This one-credit course explores the theory and practice of creative drama using puppets to enhance storytelling skills. The emphasis is on elementary and secondary educational applications. This course will help students to create and develop puppets and include them in lesson plans.
